End of an era... Maine Girls Academy is closing
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Maine's only private, all-girls school says it is closing.
The Maine Girls' Academy in Portland announced Thursday that its last day of operations will be July 15.
The school says the decision was based on lower enrollment and not enough revenue to operate for the upcoming school year.
School officials say they are working to transition students to North Yarmouth Academy. The head of the school has not responded to requests for comment.
North Yarmouth Academy head Ben Jackson tells the Portland Press Herald the closure of the Girls' Academy is a "loss for education."
The school was established in 1877 as Saint Elizabeth's Academy. It was formally changed to the Maine Girls' Academy in 2016.
