GORHAM (WGME) – The Colby College men's hockey team is heading out of state to compete in the NCAA Division III Frozen Four.
It’s the first time in history that a Division III college hockey team from Maine has made it this far.
The Mules will face off against four-time national champion St. Norbert at the Brooks Arena on Friday. The road to this championship has best been described by many as a miracle on ice.
Colby College reserved a spot in the Frozen Four when freshmen Justin Grillo scored a goal with 1.6 seconds left in the national quarter final game to beat SUNY Geneseo.
The Mules are on a hot streak, winning the last six games in a row, all on the road.
Mules Head Coach Blaise MacDonald says he believes winning on the road so frequently will help his team, who's destined for greatness.
MacDonald says the team is not only preparing on the ice, but in their heads.
“It'll be nothing like anything they've ever experienced before,” MacDonald said. “I want them to enjoy it, but you also have to lock in. It’s a business trip as well, so we talked a lot about those emotions. The adrenaline will be at a level you've never experienced before and how to breathe and properly channel that energy so it'll be productive."
Both coaches and players say this is an opportunity of a lifetime, not only for their team, but to make history here in the state.
