Man accused of fatally stabbing UNE student in Massachusetts; campus in mourning
WINCHESTER, MA (WGME) -- A University of New England student is murdered in Massachusetts.
The campus community is mourning her death.
Police have arrested 23-year-old Jefrey Yao of Winchester, Massachusetts.
He has been charged with one count of murder and one count of armed assault with intent to murder.
Police say 22-year-old Deane “Kenny” Stryker was studying at the Winchester Library Saturday morning when she was suddenly attacked and stabbed to death by Yao.
Investigators say Yao and Stryker had attended high school together.
Family and friends say Stryker wanted to be a doctor and was enrolled at UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.
They say they are now heartbroken.
“Deane is an amazing kid and overcome some real obstacles in her life,” Brad Harrington, family friend, said.
In a statement, UNE President James Herbert said the campus was "shocked and saddened" by Stryker's death, adding "Deane was just beginning her journey toward becoming a physician, and showed great promise as a student doctor who was passionate about medicine and helping others.”
A 77-year-old man came to Stryker's aid in the library. He was also hurt, but is expected to be ok.
Yao is currently being held without bail.
