Church makes commentary on immigration with nativity scene
DEDHAM, Mass. (WJAR) — A Roman Catholic church near Boston is using a nativity scene as a commentary on immigration.
The nativity displayed outside St. Susanna Parish in Dedham is titled "Peace on Earth?"
It shows the baby Jesus inside a cage and the three wise men separated from Mary and Joseph by a fence.
Church officials said they hope the display sparks conversation about the ongoing immigration debate and treatment of people at the border with Mexico.
"Change doesn't usually happen if people aren't affected by something. If people are upset and they begin to think, or they begin to feel something on a different level, they take a look at it and they begin to maybe see it differently," the Rev. Stephen Josoma, the parish pastor, said.
The church last year included a list of mass shootings as part of its display.
