BOSTON (WGME) -- A Christopher Columbus statue was beheaded in Boston.
The statue in Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue in the North End was surrounded by crime scene tape early Wednesday morning as the head lay on the ground, according to WBZ-TV.
It's not the first time the statue has been vandalized. In 2015, it was doused in red paint with the words "Black Lives Matter."
Protesters tore down a statue of Columbus in Richmond, Virginia as well.
About 1,000 protesters gathered Tuesday night for a peaceful demonstration in Richmond.
After that protest, several groups vandalized the statue, tore it down, and threw it in a nearby lake.
Witnesses also say it was spray painted and set on fire.
There has been a push across the nation to get rid of the Columbus Day holiday in October and replace it with Indigenous Peoples' Day.
