Yarmouth announces gun give-back day
YARMOUTH (WGME) – A gun give-back day is coming to Yarmouth.
Town councilors voted to introduce the annual event this summer.
On June 2, Yarmouth will host its first annual gun give back day at the police station.
Last week, town councilors voted 6-1 to establish a gun give back day.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 2, residents can bring in unwanted firearms or ammunition to be safely destroyed free of charge.
The program already exists in Yarmouth. It just establishes an awareness day and allows residents to do so without an appointment.
The news happens to come at a time where national retailer Dick's Sporting Goods announced that it will be destroying the guns and accessories it stopped selling in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Maine Gun Owners Association President Jeff Weinstein says he's opposed to destroying guns.
"It's really foolish that any organization or company or individual would destroy a perfectly operational firearm," Weinstein said.
