Woman hit, killed by car in Standish

    PORTLAND (WGME) -- A woman was hit and killed by a car in Standish Monday.

    The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says the crash shut down Whites Bridge Road for hours.

    The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says 69-year-old Eileen Garroway died after she was struck by a car while walking along Whites Bridge Road.

    The crash happened just after noon.

    Sheriff's officials say their investigation shows a 20-year-old Topsham man hit Garroway while she was walking, and then crashed the car into a tree on the side of the road.

    The crash shut down the road for hours while police investigated.

    They say they still aren't sure why the crash happened, but say it's a sad day for the community.

    "It's just a tragic event,” Captain Scott Stewart said. “We remind drivers to pay attention to their surroundings, and operate their vehicle in a safe manner."

    Whites Bridge Road reopened before 4 p.m.
