WISCASSET (WGME) – Wiscasset town officials are looking for more people to join their police department.

Sergeant Craig Worcester says he's the last active Wiscasset officer, with a handful of reserve officers around if needed.

Town officials say they have three openings, including police chief.

Town officials say problems started earlier this summer when their former police chief retired, and then two officers left shortly afterwards.

They say that they are currently getting support from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office to cover some shift times, but they can’t do that forever.

Police officials say law enforcement around the state are having hiring problems, and they say its mainly because people are only seeing the negative sides of the job in the news.

"They see things that are happening, but they only see a small minority of our profession in the news, and once that stigma is changed or erased we will see an influx of qualified and good applicants," Worcester said.

Town officials say they are planning on all positions being filled by the end of September.
