USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival wraps up in Casco Bay
SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) – Casco Bay was brimming with boats Wednesday afternoon.
The USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival wrapped up Wednesday at Bug Light in South Portland. About 100 young sailors traveled from all over the northeast to compete in Maine.
Wednesday was Day 2 of the races in beautiful Casco Bay. Kids ages 8 to 18 sailed around Fort Gorges Wednesday afternoon going for gold.
This is a regional competition with others taking place around the country. Maine is a frequent host for the northeast region, whether it's in Portland, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, or Mount Desert Island.
Three types of boats were sailed, optimists, 420s, and lasers. Optimists are sailed solo, while the larger 420s have a crew of two.
Win or lose, the organizers want the kids to learn and enjoy competing.
