UCU tackles food insecurity among college students
PORTLAND (WGME) -- University Credit Union is tackling a new target in its holiday hunger campaign this year - food insecurity among college students.
The campaign is raising money for campus food pantries on colleges within the University of Maine system.
Feeding America, a national network of food banks which studies food insecurity, found 49.3 percent of Feeding America clients in college across the country reported having to choose between food and educational expenses. The credit union's campaign goal is to raise $7,500 in money and food items across the state.
UCU President Matt Walsh said he is shocked how many students are dealing with food insecurity and feels they have a duty to do what they can to raise awareness.
"The reality is that students are having to choose between books and other living expenses, and maybe having to short change themselves on food . couple that with the stresses of school and everything else that goes with it. We're learning that some of these food pantries are serving 20 plus people a day, which is pretty significant," Walsh said.
Donations can be made by phone, mail or by dropping off funds and food items at any UCU location.
