Travel writer asks Mainers to vote yes on Question 1

Travel writer Rick Steves is in Portland promoting Question 1, which would legalize recreational marijuana use in Maine.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Travel writer Rick Steves is in Portland promoting Question 1, which would legalize recreational marijuana use in Maine.

Steves was involved in marijuana legalization initiatives in Oregon and his home state of Washington.

He is in Maine urging voters to vote yes on 1, to regulate and tax marijuana like alcohol.

Steves says now that several other states have legalized marijuana, there is data that shows the impact it would have in Maine.

“Use will not go up, if you vote yes and pass 1. Teen use will not go up, crime will not go up, DUI’s will not go up. The only thing that will go up is tax revenue and the responsible adult exercise of a civil liberty,” says Rick Steves, travel writer

Some opponents of the referendum include Attorney General Janet Mills, who recently expressed concerns that the initiative might allow children to possess pot.

Gov. Paul LePage posted a video on Facebook saying marijuana is stronger than it used to be and that question 1 "can be deadly."
