TOPSHAM (WGME) -- Police say an 18-month-old girl was attacked by dog in Topsham on Tuesday.

It happened around 6 p.m. at a home on Raymond Road.

Police say the girl suffered serious facial injuries and had to be taken by LifeFlight to a hospital.

The girl from Wiscasset was being babysat at the home, and had been around the 8-year-old boxer in the past without any incidents, according to police.

The dog’s owner told police the girl touched the dog's back, and it attacked.

The owner told police it had previously never been aggressive towards people.

The girl is currently at a Boston hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Brunswick animal control officer was called to the scene and took the dog away to be quarantined.

No decision has been made yet as to what will happen to the dog.
