State’s largest solar array fully operational

The largest solar array in Maine is starting to provide power to customers in Madison.

MADISON (WGME) -- The state's largest solar array is now fully operational.

The solar array is in Madison.

It's owned and financed by IGS Solar, which is a company located in Ohio.

All of the power will go to Madison Electric Works which serves about 2,500 customers in the area.

The solar array is built on 20 acres and consists of 16,000 panels.

It's large enough to power about 700 homes.

The idea is to keep power costs down for local residents.

After 25 years, Madison Electric Works will have the option to purchase the system.

Several Maine companies played a role in building the solar array.
