Standish to vote on gun range Tuesday night
STANDISH (WGME) – A proposed gun range and outdoor center in Standish remains up in the air Monday night.
The group running it would require members to also become a member of the NRA and other organizations.
Those on both sides of this proposal say they expect a large turnout Tuesday, and although they agree Standish needs a facility like this, they disagree on the requirements to use it.
The Standish Fish and Game Club says they've been fighting for this vision for almost two years.
In a rough draft, the outdoors club would be located on a number of acres of town owned land off Boundry Road, and if approved, would only cost the Standish Fish and Game Club $1 a year to lease.
The club says they require their members to also become members of the NRA and the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine.
Greg Sirpis, the club's president and also a town councilor, says they've invited dozens of activists to fight for their cause at Tuesday’s meeting,
"As far as I'm concerned, this is an infringement upon our rights," Sirpis said.
While supporters say the town shouldn't have any say, some councilors and residents believe the group shouldn't be limiting anyone.
Town councilors say they expect to vote Tuesday night at the municipal center at 7.
