Standish shoots down proposed gun range
STANDISH (WGME) -- A gun range isn't happening in Standish, after a debate Tuesday night.
Town councilors say there's tons of things wrong with the lease draft, so they didn't approve it. They say there needs to be a lot more research done and fact checking before something like this is built in the area.
We heard dozens of testimonies regarding the proposed lease draft, which would grant the Standish Fish and Game Club permission to build a gun range and outdoor center on more than 100 acres of land owned by the town and pay a lease of $1 a year for 25 years.
The majority of people at Tuesday night's meeting where against it, claiming there's an elementary school within 1,200 feet and say part of the property is deemed a wildlife sanctuary.
They also say paying $1 is ridiculous, as is having to be a member of the NRA to use it.
Those for it, say it's needed and will help people with firearm safety and give them a place that wouldn't bother too many people at normal hours of the day and bring people to the area to shoot.
They also say it’s been in the works for years.
Standish Fish and Game Club members stood up and asked the community not to look at them in a bad light after Tuesday night.
