PORTLAND (WGME) – Maine Senator Angus King spoke on the senate floor Friday about how the shutdown is having a negative impact on federal workers and ordinary citizens alike.

He says ordinary Mainers who relied on the services of the federal government are getting caught in the middle.

He also believes the government is being held hostage by the Trump administration.

“I’m also very reluctant to concede anything in the context of a hostage situation, where the United States government is being held hostage because of a project the President wants to build,” King said. “If we do this Mr. President, this will become the go-to tactic for this administration, and probably for future administrations."

Senator King says a wall isn't the right solution partly because 50 percent of the illegal immigrants in this country are here on legal visas that they have overstayed.
