SchoonerFest ends Sunday after three days of sailing, sun and fun

The three-day sailing celebration in Casco Bay known as SchoonerFest concludes Sunday with more boat races off Portland's waterfront.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- SchoonerFest wraps up Sunday with another day of sailing adventures, races and a chance to see a slice of Portland's history.

Seven tall ships will conclude their racing activities Sunday. Passengers can participate both on the shore and aboard the ships, learning the ins and outs of working the sail with Casco Bay as your backdrop.

The event is hosted by Tall Ships Portland, whose goal is to get young people out on the water.

Organizers said the event helps their cause financially and has seen some very sailing.

"This is our largest fundraiser so we can get scholarships for area youths to get some sail training in Casco Bay," said Tall Ships Portland volunteer Lee Auchincloss.

"It's been so fun, yesterday was bright and sunny and windy and we had lots of cruisers. Today has been one race after another here on the eastern waterfront in Portland," Auchincloss said.
