SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- Verizon says they want to improve reception in Scarborough with a new cell tower, but some residents don't want it in their backyard.
Verizon first has to get approval from Scarborough to begin the building process, but according to the town's planning office, they've received dozens of letters from residents against the cell tower.
Now Verizon has approached the Scarborough Sanitary District about leasing their land for the tower, in a location right off Black Point Road.
This is one of the areas in Scarborough that residents say is a dead zone for cell service, and while they feel it could be improved they're still against the new tower proposal.
In letters and emails, residents state how they oppose the height, location and the impact it could have on their environment with it being near the marsh and beaches.
Verizon did send a statement, saying the demand for wireless service has increased drastically, and hopes this will help those who live work and travel through Scarborough, including public safety providers.
