SANFORD (WGME) – Students in Sanford are learning about the importance of gun safety.

Firearm safety training was held Monday morning for students at the Sanford Christian Academy.

The important message was: If you come across a gun, don't touch it. Call a police officer or an adult.

They also learned the three basic rules: Always point the gun in a safe direction, don't put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot and keep the gun unloaded until ready to fire.

Safety instructors say they believe when kids are educated about firearms safety, they respect them a lot more.

The instructor says the kids took the training very seriously.

It did not involve any live-fire exercises.
