SACO (WGME) -- Two communities are coming together to solve traffic problems.
Route 1, one of Maine's most heavily traveled roadways, has generated a large amount of congestion over the years in both Saco and Scarborough.
Kelsey Libby moved from Portland to Saco, hoping to escape tense traffic on Route 1, but like many Saco residents, it's something they can’t shake.
With more development on the way, Saco and Scarborough are working side by side to find solutions that make Route 1 safer and more accessible.
Every day, thousands of vehicles travel the stretch, leaving little room for cyclists and pedestrians.
Wednesday night's meeting in Saco was the first of many to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive Route 1 plan.
A proposal won't be presented until the spring.
The next public meeting is on December 13 in Scarborough.
