KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- President Donald Trump is facing criticism for a number of comments he made Thursday night, including one where he mocked a popular volunteer program created by former President George H.W. Bush.

"You know all the rhetoric you see here, the ‘Thousand Points of Light,’” Trump said. “What the hell was that by the way? ‘Thousand Points of Light.’ What did that mean? Does anyone know? I know one thing, ‘Make America Great Again’ we understand. Putting America first we understand. ‘Thousand Points of Light,’ I never quite got that one. Say what the hell is that? Has anyone ever figured that out. And it was put out by a Republican."

Bush used the term "Thousand Points of Light," in his 1988 nomination acceptance speech, and again in his inauguration.

He and his wife, Barbara Bush, later started the Points of Light Foundation, an international non-profit that promotes volunteerism.

A former press secretary for H.W. tweeted about the incident.
