PORTSMOUTH (WGME) -- Portsmouth education officials have identified the student killed in a sledding accident at Sunday River early Wednesday morning.
Portsmouth School Department Assistant Superintendent George Shea confirmed that both the student killed and the one injured in the crash are Portsmouth High School students.
The name of the student killed is David Kohlhase. The injured student is not being identified at this time.
Portsmouth High School Principal Mary Lyons released a statement to parents and students at the school.
Dear PHS Parents and Students,
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of David Kohlhase, a PHS senior and beloved member of our school community. David died in a tragic sledding accident Tuesday night. Another student was also involved in the accident and has been hospitalized.
It is very difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person. It is important to rely on one another when tragedies such as this occur. We recommend that you talk to each other and share your reactions. It is important to let someone you trust know how you feel. In addition, the school has pulled together our crisis team to put a plan in place for tomorrow to provide counseling and support to students. Students who need additional support should contact their school counselor.
I know you join me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to David Kohlhase’s family. When we receive word of service details, I will share the information with you. Again, please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns or questions.
