Portland working to get rent initiatives on the ballot
PORTLAND (WGME) -- Portland's mayor says the city council is working together to try to get two rent initiatives on the November ballot.
This comes after the city clerk's office gave activists the wrong deadline for submitting signatures.
Wednesday members of Fair Rent Portland gathered at the steps of city hall to voice their concerns over the confusion.
Organizers say when they submitted signatures on Monday the city clerk's office told them there wasn't enough time to schedule and hold public hearings on the issues.
The group says the two initiatives would stabilize rent and empower residents on zoning issues, and deserve a spot on the November ballot.
The Southern Maine Landlord Association is against both initiatives, with the president calling them reckless.
