PORTLAND (WGME) – A jewelry shop in Portland is getting a lot of attention for a particular piece.
The "Maine necklace" became popular thanks to Governor Janet Mills, who features it with all her outfits.
Search through pictures and videos of Janet Mills, and you'll find a small, shiny piece of "home" in every single outfit.
Jeweler Elizabeth Prior says Mills stepped into Fore River Gallery over a year and a half ago after the necklace caught her eye in the window.
Mills says she has been wearing it ever since.
"I saw this in the window of a store in Portland and I said 'Oh I like that,' and I went in and asked ‘How much is it?’ and spent a little money and bought it and thought maybe this will be my lucky talisman," Mills said.
"Of course, I felt that I was honored also because she has access to so many things and I also know that she's busy," Prior said.
Prior says when word got out that the necklace came from her shop, dozens of customers immediately started coming in.
"As soon as that word got out and friends of mine read that, I did begin to get orders," Prior said.
She also sells other Maine-themed jewelry that's popular with locals and tourists.
"Even if they've just been here for a vacation, they're proud of having made that connection to our state,” Prior said. “So it makes it fun. It's not like a place that you know people just happen upon. People come here with great intention."
Mills says she'll be wearing the necklace every day.
"I'm afraid not to wear it now," Mills said.
