GORHAM (WGME) -- A man avoided injury after his car swerved to avoid an animal before going into a pond in Gorham Wednesday night.

Just before 7 p.m., police responded to Day Road in Gorham, finding a vehicle in a pond and the driver cold but out safely.

The 39-year-old man told police he went off the road to avoid hitting an animal.

He was able to get out of his vehicle and reach the shore, but was freezing. The man said he was heading to a friend's house nearby when the accident happened.

Given the cold weather, police said, "He's lucky" to walk away unharmed.
