WINDHAM (WGME) -- The Smitty's Cinema in Windham was evacuated Saturday evening by staff and police after it received threats at another location.

Around 9:15 pm, the manager of the Windham cinema notified police of the threat, stating that a different Smitty’s Cinema had received a non-specific threat toward the Windham location.

Police from Windham and Cumberland County evacuated the cinema as a precaution. A Maine State Police K9 helped search the building.

Just after 11 p.m., the building was deemed safe, and staff were allowed to return to the cinema to close for the night.

Windham Police have been in contact with the FBI and the incident remains under investigation, but police say there does not appear to be any further threat to public safety.

Other Smitty’s Cinema locations across the state were also evacuated as a precaution and the respective law enforcement agencies notified.
