More dead seals wash up on Maine beaches
PORTLAND (WGME) – Nine more dead seals washed up on Maine beaches Thursday, from Kittery to Brunswick.
Officials say they likely won't know what's causing the die-off for a few weeks.
Experts say sample collections and tests are still needed to solve the mystery.
This month has seen more than 130 dead harbor seals in Maine.
NOAA says the average for August is about 38.
There is some funding on the way to help study and respond to these incidents.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree says the state will get $164,000 in federal grants.
The money will go to Marine Mammals of Maine, College of the Atlantic and the University of Maine.
