BATH (WGME) -- Police say a man accidentally shot another man while handling a handgun inside a Bath apartment Wednesday night.

It happened around 7:20 p.m. at 100 Union Street.

When police arrived on scene, they say they found a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg outside with 22-year-old Anthony Alvarez.

Police say neither the victim nor Alvarez were cooperative with the officers and they wouldn’t explain how the victim was shot.

Alvarez became increasingly uncooperative at the scene and was searched by officers, according to police.

Police say officers found illegal prescription pills, which they believe to be morphine, on Alvarez.

He was then arrested and charged with unlawful possession of schedule W drugs.

The gunshot victim was treated for non-life threatening injures at Mid-Coast Hospital.

Police say witnesses told them Alvarez accidentally shot the victim in the leg while handling a handgun inside an apartment.

The handgun involved was eventually recovered by police, as was another handgun.

Alvarez owned both handguns, according to police.

Alvarez was taken to Two Bridges Jail and later released on $1,000 bail.

Police are looking into the possibility of further charges.
