Scarborough man arrested after threatening to shoot girlfriend

SCARBOROUGH (WGME) -- A nearly three-hour standoff after a Scarborough man reportedly threatened to shoot his girlfriend in the kneecaps is leading to several charges against the man.

Police said Joshua Knowles, 28, lives with his girlfriend on Manson Libby Road, and police received a call about a possible domestic violence incident around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

The girlfriend told police Knowles threatened to shoot her in the kneecaps if police were called to the scene.

The woman was able to get outside when police were on scene, and Knowles refused to come outside.

The woman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team responded to the scene, and around 3:15 p.m. Sunday Knowles came outside but was not cooperating with police. A few minutes later, he was taken into custody with incident.

Knowles was taken to the Cumberland County Jail on charges of elevated aggravated assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, domestic violence assault, aggravated reckless conduct and creating a police standoff.

Police are requesting a search warrant to enter the residence and find Knowles' handgun, according to a press release.
