AUGUSTA (WGME) -- A one-of-a-kind memorial will soon honor Maine's fallen heroes and their families. The Gold Star Memorial broke ground in Augusta Saturday.
"Gold Star" stands for a person who has lost a loved one who died during military service.
"Stories never forgotten," said organizer Jonathan Kelley. "Collectively, all of us here have shared similar circumstances. Uniting to ensure their stories and their loved ones stories are to never be forgotten."
The new memorial will be built on the ground of Capital Park in Augusta.
"To preserve a memory of the fallen and create a lasting memorial for future Gold Star families through community recognition," Kelley said.
The black granite monument is shaped like a star covered in the American flag and quotes of appreciation on all five sides.
"It's very heartfelt," Gold Star mother Lorna Harris said. "I think a lot of people walk away from this day very emotional, very proud to be associated with this project."
