Maine couple shares unforgettable connection to Bush family
KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- George and Barbara Bush connected with the community in many ways, leaving lasting friendships and memories.
For one Kennebunkport couple, the Bushes were there for the most important day of their lives.
Having a former U.S. President and First Lady at your wedding seems unthinkable, but for this couple, Barbara Bush and her husband were invited as two longtime friends.
Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen married near Walker's Point in September of 2013, shortly after marriage equality passed in Maine.
Not only did the Bushes attend the ceremony, but they signed the couples’ marriage certificate as witnesses.
Clement says it's a moment she'll cherish forever.
“We just thought, ‘What a wonderful piece of history for our kids and grandkids,’ and we just thought it was an important thing, and then it turned into this big political talk about news reporters, we had them all over here,” Clement said.
Of course, everyone wanted to know if this meant the Bushes support gay marriage.
The family spokesperson said it wasn't a political statement, just two private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.
