AUGUSTA (WGME) -- The state of Maine has banned the use of TikTok on Executive Branch state-owned devices.

Maine joins an ever-growing list of states that have banned the app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, from government devices.

The federal government has also banned the use of TikTok on all federal government devices.

Maine Information Technology says the service could pose a serious threat to the state's network infrastructure.

As a result, Maine IT sent a directive, obtained by the CBS13 I-Team, that all Executive Branch state employees should remove TikTok from state-owned or "bring your own" devices that connect to the state network.

The TikTok accounts and applications must be removed by February 1.

The Departments of Maine's Executive Branch include:

  • Administrative and Financial Services
  • Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry
  • Corrections
  • Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management
  • Economic and Community Development
  • Education
  • Environmental Protection
  • Health & Human Services
  • Inland Fisheries and Wildlife
  • Labor
  • Marine Resources
  • Professional and Financial Regulation
  • Public Safety
  • Transportation
  • Boards and Commissions

This does not apply to personal devices that are not on the state network.
