Lewiston community gathers for vigil to honor 12-year-old boy
LEWISTON (WGME) – Wednesday night, the Lewiston community gathered for a vigil, after a 12-year-old middle school student died in an apparent drowning while on a field trip.
Everyone was gathered to mourn the loss of 12-year-old Rayan Issa.
Several grief counselors were at the school Wednesday to help those deal with their loss.
As of now, all school-based water activities are banned in the district until further notice.
School officials say Tuesday, the 7th grader was playing football in the water with his friends within the safety area when he went under and never came back up.
Issa's classmates ran to notify chaperones and the on-duty life guard, who tried to find him in the murky water but were unsuccessful.
He was located by emergency crews and taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
The superintendent has hired a law firm to conduct its own investigation as to what happened.
Friends say Rayan was a bright, energetic kid who was well liked by his classmates.
The Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who was at Range Pond State Park during the time of the tragedy Tuesday to give them a call.
