AUGUSTA (WGME) -- A public hearing was held at the State House Thursday for a bill that would change Maine's license plate slogan from "Vacationland" to "Staycationland."

The hearing was quick after the bill's sponsor, lawmaker Kent Ackley, requested to kill the bill.

Ackley originally said he believed the new slogan would attract young families to move to Maine, but Thursday, Ackley says he changed his mind.

"It seems with this bill we put the cart before the horse, I’m sure everyone has got a full inbox these days, and so I would ask the committee to make a motion that this ought not to pass," Ackley said.

While there are still steps that need to be taken before the bill is officially off the table, the bill is for all intents and purposes dead at this point.
