Lawmaker pushes to rename bridge after Corporal Eugene Cole
Norridgewock (WGME) – A town rocked with tragedy, may soon be connected with a memorial.
A bill has been submitted to rename a Norridgewock bridge in honor of fallen Sheriff's Corporal Eugene Cole.
Somerset County Sheriff's Corporal Eugene Cole was shot and killed in the line of duty on April 25.
Republican Representative Brad Farrin of Norridgewock submitted a bill to rename the bridge in his honor.
Legislation will need to be passed at the State House before the bridge can be formally renamed.
However, Tom Cole, Eugene's only living brother, says it means a lot to him and his family that the community wants to honor Corporal Cole in this way.
"We feel honored that the people want to do this,” Tom said. “It's certainly something that we never would have thought of and I know Gene never would have thought of it, but yeah we're very honored that they're considering doing that."
Representative Farrin says the bill will be addressed soon if legislators return for a special session.
