KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) -- The chaplain of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport will take part in the funeral for President George H.W. Bush.
President Bush and his wife, Barbara, attended St. Ann's Church in Kennebunkport every Sunday in the summer months for decades.
On Thursday, Reverend Peter Cheney will help preside over the president's funeral in Houston, Texas, just like he did for Barbara.
Reverend Cheney has known the Bushes since joining St. Ann's in 2002.
Cheney says each member of the church was important to the Bushes and the former president and first lady were important to the church.
Cheney hopes to choose the right prayers and comments to help send off a man he can only describe as kind.
The last few years when their health started to deteriorate, members of the church would go to the Bush compound for a special visit.
"When St. Ann's was open those 15 Sundays, they were there. And then toward the end when they became frail, we would go by with communion and visit with them a little bit,” Cheney said.
Reverend Cheney says after the funeral Thursday in Houston, he will be helping at the burial site in College Station.
