FRYEBURG (WGME) -- One road is closed as an ice jam formed Saturday morning on the Saco River between Fryeburg and Conway, NH.
Conway police said River Road between East Conway and Fryeburg is closed due to the ice jam, a phenomenon officials in Maine and New Hampshire are keeping a watchful eye out for after warmer weather and rain Friday into Saturday will turn into colder weather and potential freezing conditions.
Maine Emergency Management officials are watching the Kennebec River among other places. Augusta police tweeted Saturday morning for people to move their cars off Front Street in case an ice jam does form in the area.
The National Weather Service issues this warning: An ice jam on the Saco River near Conway will keep the river running high this morning and additional water from snow melt and rain will help the river rise. This combined with ice movement will likely lead to flooding along the river through the morning. People living in flood prone areas along the Saco River should remain alert for rapidly rising water.
The ice jam is expected to continue through Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
