CAPE ELIZABETH (WGME) -- An early morning fire destroyed a home in Cape Elizabeth.

Multiple crews responded to a house on Route 77, which is Ocean House Road.

Fire officials say once they arrived, there were no cars in the driveway or in the garage, so they assumed the home was unoccupied.

The fire chief says a neighbor called in the fire around 3 a.m.

Upon their arrival, the back of the house was engulfed in flames, spreading to the sides of the building.

The fire was so large, the chief says, they couldn't enter to search the building.

Scarborough, Portland and South Portland crews assisted Cape Elizabeth in containing the fire, and officials say they had to shut down power on the street for safety reasons.

There was one injury, a firefighter hurt his hand while on a ladder and was transported to the hospital.

A part of Route 77 was shut down for hours and continued with minor delays.

Officials spent hours trying to contact the homeowner and finally reached her about four hours later, safe, in Sugarloaf.
