Freeport opens brand new track and field
PORTLAND (WGME) -- After years of fundraising efforts, a dream became reality in Freeport Friday afternoon.
A new athletic facility was unveiled in honor of a running legend.
The Joan Benoit Samuelson Track and Field at Freeport High School held its ribbon cutting and first track meet Friday.
The project began as a community fundraising effort in 2015 and was later approved by voters.
Nike donated a large portion of the costs.
The facility will host football, soccer, track and others sports, and Samuelson hopes it will inspire others.
“It's truly in the heart of this community and it's totally accessible and it's going to improve the health and wellness of this community and many ways and I just, I'm sort of in disbelief," Samuelson said.
Both the track and field are made from recycled Nike sneakers, and new bleachers are expected to be added in the fall.
