PORTLAND (WGME) -- Get ready for another intense hurricane season.

It officially begins next week, and experts are releasing what they're expecting.

The National Weather Service is preparing us for summer by declaring it National Safe Boating Week.

Thursday's focus is on hurricane preparedness. If you have a boat, keep these suggestions in mind.

  • Be prepared to secure your boat before June 1.
  • Monitor the forecast and plan ahead.
  • Haul out your boat or add lines during a hurricane or tropical storm watch.

With the start of hurricane season just seven days away, NOAA released their 2018 Atlantic hurricane season outlook.

They're going with a 40 percent probability of a near normal number of hurricanes.

That means 10-16 named storms, 5-9 hurricanes, and 1-4 major hurricanes between June 1 and November 30.

You can take solace in the statistics, though. According to the experts, there's just a 5 percent chance that a hurricane will hit Maine.
