Early morning fire displaces five in Portland

The fire happened on the second floor of an apartment building on Summer Street in Portland early Sunday morning.

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Five people were displaced by an early morning fire Sunday on Summer Street in Portland.

The fire was reported around 2:15 a.m. Sunday at 21 Summer St. in Portland.

When crews responded to the scene, flames were showing from the second floor.

All five people inside the building with two apartments got out safely, and the fire was knocked down within 15 minutes.

Fire officials said the people are displaced and Summer Street remained closed Sunday morning after the Portland Water District had to go under the street to shut off water to the building.

Firefighters remained on scene until 6 a.m. The cause remains under investigation but the fire is not considered suspicious.

The Red Cross of Maine is helping the people displaced by the fire.
