Demonstrators Take a Knee to Protest Racial Injustice

Demonstrators take a knee at the Portland Jetport, to show support for NFL Players who protested racial injustice

SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) - Demonstrators at the Portland Jetport took a knee on Saturday, to recognize the message of the NFL players who knelt during the national anthem during some football games this season.

Some players say they took a knee to call for an end to racial injustice and systematic oppression of people of color.

More than 200 Mainers showed their support by taking a knee in prayer at the Portland Jetport.

"I would say that today our mission was accomplished," said demonstrator Kate Goddard. "We had two goals. One was to get travelers to kneel with us, maybe if someone had never considered the issue of race and impression of what NFL players were doing whenever they take a knee. It's really an important discussion about what we do as Americans. And the values of justice and kindness are as American as Apple pie."

Members of the clergy, Veterans for Peace, and people of all faiths attended the demonstration today.
