Cryotherapy offers nontraditional treatment for pain relief

Cryotherapy uses sub-zero temperatures to treat everything from athletic injuries to swollen joints.

FALMOUTH (WGME) -- Inside Maine Cryospa and Therapy in Falmouth is a cold blast of pain relief.

“We use cold as a therapy,” Manager Nicole Robinson said. “It’s been used since the dawn of time.”

Cryotherapy uses sub-zero temperatures to treat everything from athletic injuries to swollen joints.

“It gets rid of all the inflammation in your body,” Robinson said. “It’s a really, really good source of pain relief for everybody. Specifically with arthritis”

A whole-body treatment....at -220 degrees.

“It’s kind of like a really cold hug. It envelopes you when you’re in there,” Robinson said.

Tanks of liquid nitrogen cool the chamber with a dry vapor until you’re ready to step inside.

“It’s only your skin getting cold. Your temperature never changes,” Robinson said. “So what happens is your blood rushes away from your extremities.”

A treatment in the chamber lasts three minutes. Cryotherapy can also be used in spot treatments to help with headaches and other ailments.
