Correctional officer facing felony charge after accidental shooting

PORTLAND (WGME) -- A correctional officer is facing a felony charge, after police say he accidentally shot another officer.

It happened inside a pickup at the police academy in Vassalboro last June.

Maine State Police said 24-year-old Matthew Benger of Portland was sitting in the passenger seat handling a privately-owned 9 mm, when it went off and hit the passenger seated in the back of truck in the in the leg.

The victim, 33-year-old Matthew Morrison, had to have surgery.

The men and one other man in the truck were all taking part in a basic training program.

Benger appeared in court Monday on a felony charge of reckless conduct with a firearm.
