Portland (WGME) -- More than 300 people in need of a Thanksgiving meal this holiday were greeted with a smile and conversation Thursday. Wayside food programs served up turkey with all the fixings to those with no where else to go.
"There are a lot of people in our community who for whatever reason don't have somewhere to go or don't have the ability to go somewhere," Mary Zwolinski with Wayside said. "Many don't want to eat alone and there are some who don't want to cook their own meal."
The annual event was held at the Portland Club and organizers said it helps bring the community together.
"That's what got me started the first time," volunteer Perry St Louis said. "Then I just kept coming back year to year to year."
Volunteers carved up 40 turkeys and prepared dozens of sides thanks to donations.
"It's all about food and strengthening our community," Zwolinski. "Getting people to come together over food."
