Colby student helps Hurricane Harvey victims find shelter
WATERVILLE (WGME) -- A Colby College student from Houston is helping Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas find shelter.
Sophomore Nile Dixon, who's studying computer science and technology, created a "text bot."
It connects Houston residents to the closest shelters by cell phone.
All they have to do is text a phone number.
From there, an automated messaging system will respond with the address of open shelters in the area.
Dixon says the group he works with recently did this for Texas homeless shelters.
At this point he says it’s helped about 3,000 people find a safe place to stay.
"It’s just been a very humbling experience to know that it’s not too late to do something, to help someone in need,” Dixon said. “If you have the inspiration to do something to help people."
Dixon hopes to expand his idea to other states who could potentially be affected by natural disasters.
If you know somebody who could benefit from the messaging system, the number to text is (346) 214-0739.
