Clam strip shortage causing problem for Maine businesses
KITTERY (WGME) -- A shortage of clam strips is causing problems for some small businesses.
Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery is known for its clam strips, but recently patrons have been disappointed when ordering.
With the price of seafood going up, the cost of clam strips isn’t. Whole belly clams cost about $160 a gallon and clam strips cost about $40 a gallon.
Employees at Maine fisheries say they believe the supply is low and fishermen aren't spending as much time clamming, because their time is better spent catching more expensive seafood.
Michael Landgarten has been the owner of the clam hut for 32 years. He says all summer they've been running out of the clam strips on a weekly basis and he's never seen anything like it.
Employees say the clam strip shortage isn't just affecting them, but every restaurant in the region that offers fried clam strips.
They say it's hurting their business and if you would like clam strips it's best to call ahead to make sure they've got them.
