Bill would require all law enforcement officers in Maine to wear body cameras

    Body Camera (WGME)

A bill would require all law enforcement agencies in Maine to wear body cameras.

The bill, LD 636, is sponsored by State Senator Susan Deschambault.

The bill would require that, beginning January 1, 2021, every law enforcement agency in Maine will require its officers to wear body cameras.

It would also require that the body cameras are recording at all times when officers are engaged in law enforcement-related encounters or activities.

The bill states the use of body cameras by law enforcement officers and the maintenance and retention of data and recordings must be consistent with model policies and procedures developed by the Board of Trustees of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety.
