    Jesse Nichols (Augusta Police Department)

AUGUSTA (WGME) -- Augusta Police say an officer, who was out on patrol, caught a man who allegedly robbed a convenience store Sunday afternoon.

Police say an officer was patrolling in the area of Civic Center Drive and the Townsend Road around 2:15 p.m. when he heard shouting coming from the Big Apple at 146 Civic Center Drive and saw a man run from the store.

Police say the suspect went into the store, demanded money from the clerk, and fled.

The suspect identified as 29-year-old Jesse Nichols, a transient male who frequents Augusta, was caught a short time later.

“This is an excellent example of an officer diligently patrolling his district and remaining in tune to his surroundings,” Augusta Deputy Chief Kevin Lully said.
