Astronomical high tide causes flooding along coast

PORTLAND (WGME) -- Areas along the coast saw high levels of water due to an astronomical high tide.

In Portland, streets around the waterfront saw as high as 11 inches in flooding.

The flooding was caused by the close position of the moon to the earth, and its effect on the high tide.

People working in Portland say it happens a couple times a year, but you should not take it lightly.

“Don’t drive through it. It will ruin your vehicle. We’ve seen at least three vehicles ruined since I’ve worked here,” Emma Langelier, works in Portland, said.
